Organic Sheep Leather

Sheep leather from Parikkala

For us to create durable bags, we need the material used to be of high quality. One of our material partners is the Kalliomäki farm, located in Parikkala. Their history strecthes out all the way to 1739. The first sheep moved into the farm in 1996, and at the same time the farm moved from industrial practises into organic farming. The sheep at the Kalliomöki farm are allowed to roam free and they only eat the vegetation at the farm, such as organic oat, horse bean and hay. The sheep are raised for their wool and meat. We utilise the excess leather hides from food production as material for our bags.

Durable material from an Organic Farm

How does the sheep leather end up from Parikkala as material for Lovia bags? We want to open up the whole history behind the material we use as transparently as possible, so you as the person wearing the bag know everything about your own treasure’s journey.

The sheepleather used in Lovia bags comes from sheep raised at the Kalliomäki farm in Parikkala. From there, the excess leather hides travel to Kruunupyy and the Ahlskog factory. There they are tanned to be even more durable and stand the test of time. The next stop for the material is Helsinki and our design table.

As a material sheep skin is soft, durable and light. Although there is a massive amount of sheep farming and food production in Finland, the utilisation of the leather is rather minimal.
