Elk leather

By: Anniina Mustalahti | September 6, 2015

Due to its fibre structure and supply chain, elk leather makes a perfect and ethical luxury bag. The unique grain patterns combined with the fine balance of thickness and softness make elk leather superior compared to any other leather.

Lovia’s elk hides are supplied from Nordic hunters and tanned at Kokkolan tannery in North-Western Finland. Since 1990’s, Kokkolan has built a network of local hunters, especially in Finland and Sweden, from whom they source the elk hides.

Elks are wild animals that live freely in pure Nordic nature. The elk population in the Nordic countries is around 600,000. The population is managed through government-controlled hunting, as elk don’t have enough natural enemies in the wild.

Siddique Nure Alam works at Kokkolan Tannery.

The tannery has been active since 1957, when the grandfather of the current managing director set up the business with his business partner. Nowadays the tannery is specialized in elk and yak leather.

Kokkolan uses only renewable energy sources. All chemicals used are supplied within the European Union from retailers who have to abide to the high European environmental standards. The leather is chrome tanned.

Toni Dahlvik, CEO Juha Örnberg, production manager Joe Taruru, Tamara Zaitler & Bjarne Bergdahl enjoy working in a multicultural atmosphere.
